Leo Steen
Leo Steen, Rose Ranch, Sonoma, California, Grenache, 2024
Listen, I know the label is a little MEH, but this wine is AMAZING! And it's so well made. It is the perfect example of how you definitely should not judge a book by its cover. The first key to unlocking why this is so mind bending is that the Grenache vines are super old. Then to top it off, the vines are planted in ancient lava soils. EXPLOSIVE!! What the old vines do is create depth and complexity within the wine. Leo Steen operates biodynamically and with such pure intention, the wines are beyond delicious. Seriously perfect for a summer day. And I have to say, a nice departure for Sonoma Rose which can sometimes be too rich and full bodied for my taste. Leo Hanson has worked all over Europe, and as a Danish man, settled in California to make wine, where his European palate informs a gentle approach to his wine making. Elegance in a bottle!!!
