Mae Son
Mae Son, Vino Bianco, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy, Muller Thurgau, 2022
Cantina Furlani actually makes this wine as a side project. They got access to additional vineyards in their area and the vines and the opportunity was too good to pass up. Enter their alternative label: Mae Son (pronounced MyyyySon, like Maison in french aka house). We are in the high elevation Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige near the Dolomites. It’s cooler there & it’s Alpine-y & the wines always take on a unique character from grape to grape. This wine is a glowing green orb of greatness, but also straight up it glows green in a wine glass. The wine is made from 100% Muller Thurgau, which is most commonly found growing at higher elevations so it's definitely lesser known than let’s say Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a test tube grape that was intentionally bred in the 1880s as a crossing of Sylvaner & Riesling. At high elevations, it is minerally and lime zesty. The wine has a sheer freshness and slight herbaceous notes coupled with a savory, salty pinch to bring this wine into the category of: Totally Delicious.
