Most people’s knowledge of wine from Provence is dominated by rose, which Provence is arguably most famous for. But about an hour north of Nice, sort of on the fringe of Provence, tucked into the maritime Alps is a tiny town called Villars-sur-Var where Clos Saint Joseph thrives. The domaine is the only domaine in the area, it has vines planted around a winding river, enclosed in stone walls and the most magical white wine is produced. This white is a blend of rolles (aka the French word for vermentino) and ugni blanc. The white wine is creamy, salty, stony and a touch bitter all at the same time. The grapes are grown in limestone rubble, which is the best kind of rubble btw, and the domaine practices biodynamics. I love introducing a new wine to members, honestly I had never had anything quite like it, it’s the perfect spring white….So good I can barely handle it!!!
